Formula 1 Sprint Race Update in Mexico

The Formula 1 sprint race offers excitement and action. The Argentinian driver Franco Colapinto will compete in the Mexican Grand Prix, but there will be no sprint race this weekend.

Formula 1 Sprint Race Update in Mexico

Since 2023, Formula 1 has incorporated the double race format, with a sprint race followed by the final race, in six Grands Prix. The sprint race lasts approximately 100 kilometers, one-third of the distance of a traditional race, and takes place on Saturdays, determining the starting grid for the main race. Its goal is to increase excitement and provide more spectacle for fans, offering an additional and shorter race. The top eight drivers earn points for the championship, albeit fewer than in the main race.

The sprint race format was introduced in Formula 1 in 2021 as a trial in three rounds, being a success that has been maintained and expanded in subsequent seasons, reaching six Grands Prix in 2023 and 2024. This format has brought significant changes, such as greater excitement and action on track, more opportunities for drivers to earn points and improve their standings in the championship, as well as increased risk due to it being a shorter race.

For fans, the sprint race offers more action and excitement during a competition weekend, with the possibility of enjoying two races, different formats, and strategies. Overtakes are more frequent as it is a shorter race, making it more dynamic and entertaining to watch. Franco Colapinto, the Argentine driver, participated in the sprint race in the United States and will now compete in the final race of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Although Colapinto is only participating in the final race in Mexico, the sprint race is not part of the schedule for the Mexican Grand Prix or some other Grands Prix. This format is selectively held in certain races throughout the season, aiming to provide variety and excitement for viewers. Sprint races will continue in Brazil and Qatar after the Mexican Grand Prix.
